and prepare you to engage with literary criticism in your Term Paper.
Task:
 Use library resources to find a work of literary criticism in which the
author makes an argument about one of the novels we are reading for this
class (any of the novels, including Caleb Williams, will work). This work
should be:
o either an article published in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal or a
chapter in a book from a scholarly publisher;
o at least 10 pages long;
o published within the last 50 years; and
o should present an argument that you find interesting about one of our
novels.
 After reading this text, write a paragraph summarizing it, focusing on the
text’s main claims, the evidence it provides for them, and the broader goals
or stakes of the argument (why the author thinks it is significant).
 If the database in which you found your text provides an abstract for it, you
must not plagiarize this. Your summary will necessarily have some
conceptual overlap with the abstract, it must be your own original
explanation of the text, not a mere rewording of the abstract provided.
 Your summary should not rely on direct quotations, but it must include at
least one quotation from your text (with a citation). Only quote when the
source uses a word or phrase that is significant for its argument.
Summary Specifications:
 Your summary should be around 300-500 words long, not counting your
Works Cited page.
 Your summary must be in MLA format, double-spaced, with properly
formatted in-text citations and a Works Cited page for the work of literary
criticism and any other sources (e.g., the novel) cited.
 Your summary should be carefully edited for grammar, spelling and
punctuation.

Creative writing in response to literature is a way for students to respond to literature in a personal way. Creative writing provides a way for students to practice critical thinking and develop a stronger understanding of literary criticism while showing creativity and a bit of their own personalities. For this creative writing assignment, you will do a character analysis to allow you to get inside the mind of one of the characters.
Step 1: Review
Malory’s Morte Darthur, “The Conspiracy Against Lancelot and Guinevere” and “War Breaks Out Between Arthur and Lancelot,” Vol. 1, pp. 337-347.
Refer to the grading rubric for this assignment using the link in the Gradebook.
Step 2: Reflect
Morte Darthur is told as a third-person narrative, not as a first-person narrative. The difference is that a third-person narrative presents the characters to us in the words of a narrator rather than from the words of the characters themselves. The story contains descriiptions such as “King Arthur did this” or “King Arthur said that,” but it’s not as if the character King Arthur himself is telling everything from his perspective. Of course, sometimes he speaks in the story, but he does not get to tell the story or what he’s thinking or feeling. It is up to the reader to determine what King Arthur might be thinking or feeling.
Step 3: Respond
For this assignment, try to get into the mind of King Arthur. Be imaginative and creative. Pretend you are King Arthur writing in a private journal about his feelings the evening before leaving on his hunting trip. You will not be retelling the plot of the story; you will be King Arthur reflecting on the events of the day. In this journal entry you can put down whatever thoughts King Arthur might have using absolute frankness and honesty.
Criteria:
Write a minimum 400 words in paragraph form, using Times New Roman 12-point font (or similar) with double spacing. A title page is not required.
Submit as a Microsoft Word attachment on the submission page (click title above). Assignments not submitted in this way may be returned to you ungraded.
