Your task in this assignment is to analyze the techniques and strategies an author uses in deploying his argument. You should thoroughly read through the content of Module 7 before starting this assignment.
What to do:
Please find the following essay in the library catalogue: “Anxiety of the Influencer: Hannah Arendt and the Problem with Social Media” by James Ogden Sharpe. Analyze and evaluate the writer’s argument and evidence based on the principles of rhetorical and critical analysis. In your thesis, you are essentially arguing whether or not the author’s rhetoric or argument is successful and why you understand it to be so. A successful essay will focus on demonstrating why your position on the text is correct through a detailed analysis of the article you are engaging with.
Ensure you include the following in your essay’s introduction:
1. Who is the intended audience of the text?
2. What is the purpose of the text (to argue, inspire, cajole, etc.)?
3. What is the thesis or main argument of the essay?
4. Then, most importantly, end your introduction with YOUR thesis statement,
which should be your position on whether or not the author successfully put forward their argument and what rhetorical strategies/techniques make their argument strong/weak. These rhetorical strategies/techniques should then connect to the topic sentences of your body paragraphs.
The majority of your essay should be based on key examples of how the author attempts to support his or her position. While your analysis may not be a matter of being “right or wrong,” if you do not support your argument about the text with evidence (examples from the text), your assertions will be ungrounded and therefore less convincing. Exceptional essays may engage in analysis of the essay’s structure, style, rhetorical techniques, evidence, and other aspects.

This will be your topic throughout the entire course, so the activities required for this assignment will provide the foundation for your future Touchstones. The topic for an argumentative research paper must be a debatable topic, meaning that it involves conflicting viewpoints. Additionally, it cannot be a topic that is already decided or agreed upon by most of society. You will need to take a firm position on the topic and use evidence and logic to support the position. Touchstone 1.2 includes a research question, a working thesis, a detailed outline, and a reflection on this pre-writing process.
DIRECTIONS: Refer to the list below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.

Begin by identifying title and author. Characterize the speaker and give a brief overview of the surface reading—just what happens in the poem. Continue this introductory paragraph with three or four sentences highlighting the major images in the poem to create a prose rendering. Narrow your introductory paragraph down to a thesis statement in which you use terms from our vocabulary list. Identify some sort of effect on the reader that leads you to infer the theme or central idea in the poem. This theme should be part of your thesis statement.
Then, continue your explication by examining each image or three or four major images. Each image should, at the very least, have its own paragraph. Make sure you point to certain lines to prove what you see in the poem. Identify and discuss figurative language. Explain the denotation and connotation of key terms and how this diction contributes to tone. Examine versification. Your publish should be typed with at least two extra copies on which students can give you feedback.
Your paper should be 1000 words, 7-8 paragraphs, or 4 typed pages, double-spaced with standard one-inch margins and standard 12-point font. Use MLA parenthetical citation form to document your sources. Include a cover sheet and a list of works cited. Your paper should be clean and well organized. Remember to use present tense when you are referring to literature, but past tense when referring to something in the author’s past or a date when the poem was written or published.

1. Your first paragraph is a prose rendering. Begin by identifying the title and author, characterizing the speaker, and giving a brief overview of what happens in the poem. After this first sentence, quickly highlight the major images in the poem using three or four sentences. Trigger warning: transphobia
My current research work touches on a person many people have seen as a hero because of the stories she created, but are starting to turn against because of her public transphobia: J.K. Rowling. By analyzing a meme alongside articles from news sources that you find on your own, you will try to determine if Rowling is being represented accurately in these memes. I am providing five memes (pasted below) and J.K. Rowling’s statement on trans activism (Links to an external site.) from her website (I also encourage you to look at her Twitter feed, @jk_rowling, if you want more information on her position on the topic). You must choose one of the memes, find AT LEAST 5 other news articles related to the issue in your meme, and use them to analyze the argument the meme is making. In the course of 5-6 pages, you will support/challenge the meme’s argument with your sources, and ultimately determine the veracity of the meme’s position.
Your critique of the article must be framed in a thesis of your own, in which you state 1) whether or not the meme is stating a trustworthy position and 2) why/how that meme is successful/unsuccessful.
The news articles that you find, if you consider them trustworthy, should meet the Trust Project journalism standards. However, you are welcome to include articles that are untrustworthy in order to dispute them in your paper. In the works cited, you will need to briefly note (1-2 sentences) why the article is trustworthy or not.
Minimum requirements:
5-6 pages (meaning, at minimum, your paper must go to the bottom of page 5).
Double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-pt font, page numbers, and standard margins.
At least five news articles used as sources.
A title that reflects the thesis of your paper.
A thesis that states a claim you’re trying to prove throughout the paper

Whichever organizational style you use, make sure that you use evidence from your sources to support your points. While you may choose to use direct quotations, you should rely more upon paraphrasing and your own synthesis of information. You may provide your own interpretation of works here, pointing out strengths and weaknesses of your sources’ arguments.

Format your literature review according to your respective style guide.
At this point you’re ready to return to your sources and begin publishing your literature review. You may want to have your annotations from your annotated bibliography handy; they may help you see connections and disparities between your sources as you begin. Or you may choose to create a source synthesis chart to help you map out the academic conversation happening amongst your sources (see page 214 in An Insider’s Guide to Academic Writing for an example). Whatever method you use to get started, keep in mind that your instructor is always available for questions and feedback. Happy writing!
